meals are prepared to meet 1/3
of the recommended dietary allowance, (RDA), for seniors. We regret that we are
unable to provide special meals for those who are on a doctors’ prescription.
How to dine with us
When you are ready to join us for lunch, please phone the
Golden Circle Nutrition Program office at 387-6758 to make a reservation for the
site you would like to attend. We appreciate one day’s advanced notice, so
please call one day ahead of the day you would like to eat. No reservations are
required for the Acacia Park Apartments site and Colorado Springs
Senior Center site.
How much do the meals cost?
The cost of our meals is a donation of your choice based
upon your ability to pay. Our suggested donation is $2.00, but no eligible
person is denied lunch because of their inability to give. Meal
ticket cards are available for sale at all meal sites. You may purchase a card
with 12 meals for $20 or a card with 6 meals for $10.
Meal cards and food stamps and are accepted at all locations, any day
that the meal site is open. If a
friend or family member under 60 years of age would like to join you for lunch,
they are welcome to do so. The guest
fee for a non-eligible diner is $6.50.
Need a ride?
Rides to and from the meal sites are available through
Silver Key Senior Services by calling 884-2380,
or in Woodland Park through Teller County Transit at 687-3330.
Where we get our funding
The Golden Circle Nutrition Program is sponsored by the
Housing Authority of the City of Colorado Springs and does not discriminate on
the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or religion. Funding
for our program comes from Federal, State and City grants; The ‘Title III of
the Older Americans Act, participation by the cities of Colorado Springs and
Manitou Springs, and from your generous donations. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on
Aging, local churches and charitable individuals in the community also
contribute valuable resources to the program.
Are you interested in becoming a Golden Circle Nutrition
Program volunteer?
The success of our program relies on the willingness of our
volunteers to donate their time and effort in helping us serve meals, make
coffee, and assist with paper work or serving on committees. If you are interested
in volunteering your time with our program, please see any one of our meal site
managers or call the Golden Circle Nutrition Program at 387-6758.
A LOOK BACK
Following the $85,000 renovation of the kitchen and dining
room at the Acacia Park Apartments, the Acacia Multi-Service and Nutrition
Program served its first meal on Tuesday February 18, 1975. Eighty-three meals
were served. The goal of serving 250 meals, Monday through Friday, at the Acacia
Dining Room was quickly reached.
On February 1, 1976 serving days expanded to include Sunday.
The Sunday meal was made possible by cash donations and volunteer assistance
from a group of downtown churches. The Sunday meal was an immediate hit,
reaching 197 lunches by the second week.
By early 1977, the program had expanded to serve at the Casa
de Cerro Apartments and three community centers operated by the Community Action
Program. Four hundred sixty meals were served on an average day. In 1979,
720 meals were served each day, 40 meals per day were provided to
Silver Key, for home delivery (Meals-on-Wheels), and serving sites had
expanded to 10.
In the early 1980s, the Nutrition program provided over
22,000 meals per year to Silver Key for home delivery. In 1985, the program
changed its name to Golden Circle Nutrition Program in recognition of the
region‑wide impact of its programs.
Through the decade of the ‘80s, sites changed and grew.
Weekdays saw a regular serving of 750 meals and Sundays were at 300 meals. Over
4,000 meals per year were provided to Home and Health Care for rural home
delivery.
The ‘90s ended with the kitchen and dining room at the
Acacia receiving a renovation and redecoration. The ’90s proceeded with an
increase in diners and a focus on special diets and nutrition counseling and
education. The serving sites have expanded to 24 locations throughout the Pikes
Peak Region and a serving of 800-1,000 meals, Monday through Friday. A
kosher meal is served at Temple Shalom on Monday and Wednesday.
On April 10, 1999, meal service expanded to include
Saturdays at the Acacia Park Apartments site, only. An average of between 80-100
meals is served.
The Golden Circle Nutrition Program again experienced a
major renovation of the kitchen, dining area, and main office starting in
December, 2006 and finishing in February of 2007.
During this time, the meal program was operating out of The First
Methodist Church kitchen serving soup and sandwiches to keep our program
operating. The meal count was lower
than normal due to the renovations of our program, and type of meals that we
were restricted to, but the results was worth it.
Again, with the continued generosity of our diners and
volunteers, we hope to be able to serve you for many years to come!
